The Newest Schoon

I'd like to introduce you to the newest member of the Schoon clan:
Rock-a-bye Turtle aka "Rocky"

My mom is in town to help nurse us back to health. While she and Maggie were outside playing yesterday they came across this precious little turtle. Maggie was very excited that she was allowed to touch it!

I grew up with a friend who had a box turtle named Shelly. It always seemed like an awesome pet. After we found the turtle, I emailed my friend to make sure keeping the turtle wasnt a bad idea. She quickly replied with full support of our pet adoption. So we decided that we might keep the turtle around... at least for a while. Maggie said the turtle was sleepy a lot (mostly it was just scared of her), so she named it Rock-a-bye and is calling it Rocky for short.

After getting over the initial shock of Maggie's exuberance we got to see this little guy out and moving about the kiddie pool. We are still trying to figure out if Rocky is a girl or a boy.

Maggie jumping up and down for joy! She told us that she loves Rocky very much. I think she knows full well that she is working this situation.

Here she is trying to feed Rocky a wild strawberry.

We are learning about turtle habitats and how best to care for Rocky. I am sure there will be more to follow in the Rocky saga.

  1. we had a box turtle for over 5 years...her name was Tilley. My mom found her walking across the road with a 2" crack on the underside of her shell. My mom wanted to nurse her back, but she became part of the family until a door was left open and she decided it was time to go off into the wild. she was awesome. They are really fun. Have fun Maggie!!! love Uncle MIKE
