One Day A Year

Generally I do not like getting flowers. I really dont. I am not an overly money conscious person, but the first time Noel bought be flowers I accidentally saw the receipt. And flipped out. On Valentine's Day. I think the event gave us both a complex.

Luckily he still married me.

So we have a rule in our house - no ridiculously expensive arrangements of flowers on that V-Day in February or any other day for that matter. One flower wrapped in a piece of tissue paper will do when the urge to bring home flowers arises (and it does because Noel's romantic and wonderful and he cant help getting me at least ONE flower from time to time). I've grown to love that single stem in a piece of green paper because it is an expression of his love for me. I truly love that now there are usually 3 flowers wrapped in paper hiding behind his back. One for each of his girls.

But there is one day a year when I absolutely love getting flowers. On June 12, 2004 I walked into a church carrying 7 calla lilies tied with a simple white ribbon and married the love of my life. Now on June 12 that same man brings me a calla or two so we can remember our wedding day together. And I love it. I've never once asked how much they cost* and I've honestly never cared. I wouldnt mind spending a bucket of money to remember and celebrate that day. In the days and years that have followed our marriage has only blossomed and grown into a deeper and more beautiful union with tons of wonderful memories and two precious children.

Today Maggie and I decided to play "brides" and amazingly I could zip my dress. I guess clean eating has revealed an extra bonus - it is the first year I've been able to zip my dress since I said I do. There is a good chance it fit better today then it did back in 2004.

*I do however have a huge bone to pick with all the florists out there who refuse to make an arrangement with just a couple of callas and some greenery to help them stand up. Every year Noel asks and is refused the arrangement I would like best. So I've learned to live with the roses or other flowers that are forced upon us by people who dont understand that sometimes simple pictures are best.
