A laid back 4th

We didnt have any concrete plans for celebrating today so we just took the day as it came.

When we woke up this morning it was still cool so we took the girls for a walk to the park. Along the way we met an adorable puppy who decided to come along with us. After a while we were afraid she'd get lost so Noel ran her home and then had to sneak away to catch back up with us. It was very amusing. We had a great outing and got back just as the day really started warming up. Nora took a nap and then woke up really cute and happy.

Meanwhile, Maggie braved the heat and took her new bubble blower out for a test run. It uses up a lot of bubble juice but it also puts out a good many bubbles in a short amount of time.

After that we ate lunch, watched Joey Chestnut eat an insane amount of hot dogs and went outside to pick blackberries. I was very excited to learn that we had blackberry briars in our yard this year. Here's our haul:

Luckily our neighbors Rex and Charlean look out for us too. Here's a portion of their haul that they shared with us (sorry its sideways):

Then we headed over to Stan and Margaret's house for homemade peach ice cream and enjoyed a little time visiting with friends. When we headed home we realized that we hadnt really planned dinner so we decided to have hamburgers. Since the grill is in the basement and we didnt have hamburger meat thawed, we decided Outback hamburgers would have to do (thanks for treating Sandy & Delane!!!). We even let Nora try a burger since she wasnt full after a plum, cheese bites, cucumber, squash, carrots, bread and fries. The kid has got an insatiable appetite these days.

When we got home we put Nora to bed and headed outside for a little fun with sparklers. Noel got sparklers for his birthday and we decided Maggie was old enough to play with them responsibly. She got a quick lesson from dad and was off to the races.

Her enthusiasm grew with each sparkler we lit.

She didnt quite get the idea of how to write her name yet. In another year or two, once she's mastered it on paper, we will try it again.

Then we came in and put Maggie to bed. Or so I thought. At 9:15 both girls were awake so I decided to give up and just let them stay up until the fireworks. Please enjoy Maggie dressed to prevent mosquito bites and noise interference.

She hopped up on my shoulders for a better view.

I can never get a good photograph of fireworks but here's the view from our house. Its pretty great, except for one tree... Oh well, the tree is beautiful the rest of the year.

Hope you all had a safe and fun-filled 4th of July. We love celebrating the freedom we have in this country, those who died for it and most of all the God who grants us ultimate freedom!
